A very happy birthday to the amazing Colonel (formerly Captain) Tom Moore who's 100 years old today.  Your promotion is very well deserved, have a great day Sir.     A beacon of light in dark times.

I think I came into road biking just as the British factories were having their last gasp.   As a 17 year old in 1975, there wasn't any Brand new British bikes to be had under 250cc (I'm happy to be corrected on that point if anyone knows better).  So to ride on L plates, it was either a used British C15 or a Bantam or similar or something of Japanese origin. There was the Ducati Desmo 250 single and AMC Harley had a 250 single too, but they were out of my budget new.

I ended up getting a brand new Yamaha RD200 as they were quite a bit cheaper than the 250's at the time, £408 as I recall, against about £525 for the RD250 - Happy days Lol.    The only new British bikes left by then were Triumphs Bonnevilles, the Trident and Nortons Commando 850.  I think even the BSA version of the Trident, the Rocket 3 had gone by early '76.  Didn't Triumph and BSA have a last gasp at a 350 twin, the Bandit? but I don't think it got into showrooms before they folded.

So really there wasn't much choice for a 17 year old learner rider outside the Jap 4 companies at that time.

I had to pop down to the Pharmacy in the next village for prescriptions for myself and the wife this morning.  I was sorely tempted to take the 550 down there for a brief spin, but I ended up going in the car as the missus decided she wanted me to pick up some milk and bread from the Co-op across the road.    :'(

Just looked back at my reply to Laverda Dave -  how the hell does this predictive text come up with Dresden instead of DRESDA - sorry Dave and apologies to Mr Degens,
Ian

I have a mate called Dave and when I send him a text the bloody predictive text thingy always changes his name to Daventry.  ;D

A good work friend of mine had a beige Ford Escort Mk2 back in the early 80's.  It was only an 1100, but it would probably be worth a few bob these days if he still had it.  Anyways I digress.  He came into work one morning with a broad smile on his face and I asked what was so amusing.  He said the previous evening he had left work as normal at 5pm and got into his car to drive home.  About half a mile after leaving the car park he switched on the radio and thought to himself WTF!!  Radio 2!  I never listen to Radio 2 (he was in his early 20's at the time).  Then he looked on the passenger seat and saw a copy of that days Sun newspaper.  WTF! I don't buy the Sun!!  Then he realised it wasn't his car.   He turned around and went back to work to find his car about 5 spaces down from where he had driven off in someone elses (obviously) more or less identical Escort.  Long before remote key fobs, his  Escort keys fitted the 'other' Escort's door and ignition barrel perfectly.   I can't recall if he ever met and told the other cars owner what had happened.

Welcome mate.  I have a 550 too.  Not too far from you at the Yorkshire coast.   As Steve says post up some photos when you get 5 posts under your belt.

Lovely NS Ozzy, one of those bikes I would certainly have liked to have owned.

Gosh it’s like the 14CSR owner’s club on here, no wonder we all ended up with the super reliable Hondas!

As we all know, the reliability of the vast majority of the Japanese motorcycles didn't help the British motorcycle industry one bit back in the late 60's and early 70's.  My elder brother had a Norton Commando 750 which he had no end of bother with, he eventually sold it and got a Honda 500/4.  My first motorcycle was a BSA Bantam which was crap, but I mentioned the 350K4 Honda as my worst bike because I expected it to be much better than it was, whereas I had no such hopes for the venerable Beezer.  It took me a further forty odd years to pull the trigger on a second British bike (my current Triumph Thruxton), which ironically was built in Thailand as far as I'm aware.  The thing is (like a Honda) it doesn't leak oil, it's reliable and the quality of finish is pretty good too.   What if?    What if?

The silencer on the CJ looks similar to the ones on the 550F's

Just to stick another nail in the CJ Hondas coffin, I wonder what CJ actually stood for?   Crap Job  perhaps!   ;-)

Try EBC sintered.

I couldn't get the ordinary EBC to work well.

But. Try replacing the caliper seal.

The old one could have hardened. And not retracted the piston

I did have a look at the seal John and it looked OK, but if I get further issues that will be something to check again.  I might just change the seal anyway when I get around to changing the brake pads

They ARE rubbish compared to modern bikes but then try a 1970 Triumph 650 and stop complaining!!

Its true Bryan, the opposite problem is when you get on the Tuono after riding the 550, the brakes are that bloody good I nearly go over the handlebars the first time I pull the front brake on!
