Out & About / SOHC meet in Scotland
« on: February 07, 2024, 01:04:09 PM »
Last year I suggested a meet up in Scotland for forum members, particularly those that live in more remote parts and don't travel too far down South. We don't want to be corrupted by the Southern Softies! 😉

Just kidding, the arthritis stops me from riding too far these days. The joys of reaching retirement age.

So, if anybody fancies meeting up, I suggest The Crieff Visitor Centre, PH7 4HQ on 29th or 30th June.
It's fairly central Scotland and has a large free car park, restaurant and facilities. It's a regular stop off for me when out for a ride.

There is plenty of accommodation in Crieff and surrounding area if anybody needs to stay over or are touring Scotland at the same time.

Nothing is set in stone, so date and place are flexible.

Yes Ted, that was me in the old photo. I was 3 or 4.

And no, just Imperial screw cutting gears. Will see about getting metric.

Have you still got the Myford Garath? Best tool in any workshop 👍

Not that one, my dad upgraded to a Super 7 some years later. That one is in my workshop now.
Lovely bit of kit, just not had much time to use it yet.

Here it is. 👍

Where's the warm feeling of satisfaction and achievement in that! (Whereas keeping a tenner in your wallet...now there's a fine feeling,).🙂

Are you sure you're not Scottish? ;D

The teacher who took me for metalwork, woodwork, TD and motor engineering worked on Concorde as a design engineer. A very talented man who built a harpsichord in his lunch hours and when it was finished he would play it in his lunch hour! He had us building a hovercraft in an after school club. We put a Villiers two stroke engine in it from an invalid car, the school was given three of them by the government for our motor engineering class when they were recalled for safety reasons. All this in a comprehensive school in Acton👍

I wish that I'd had a metalwork teacher like that!

Luckily I had a good teacher at home. 👍

The paint on the inside of the points cover is an insulating coat to prevent electrical shorts from the points and connections.  Maybe to stop drumming or vibration noise as well. Remember to coat it with something similar
after plating.

I need some advice from the SOHC collective. I want to put a couple of security lights on the house, one for the back garden and one for the garage door. The easiest solution would be solar powered LED lights with motion sensors. Somewhere in the 800 to 1200 lumens region would be bright enough. I don't need to dazzle the whole neighbourhood!
There are plenty on the market but reviews/feedback are pretty hit and miss. Many don't work at all or fail very quickly.

Has anybody got a good recommendation for a reliable light that doesn't cost a fortune?  Or am I better off biting the bullet and fitting mains powered lights?

They came fourth in the last leg and lie 10th overall in the total race.

Looking at the crew roster it looks like there are 65 people on board but of course a boat that size couldn’t accommodate that many I’d imagine so it looks like they rotate the crew with some of the crew only doing 1 leg and then going home, whereas Phil seems to have signed on for 3 legs and misses the next leg before joining again for his last leg, leg 8. A few of the crew have signed on for the full race.

That's right. IIRC each boat has 12 crew on each leg.

It might be media hype but a member of the original Pink Floyd is alleged to have said "they are better live than we were".

I forgot to say that Dave Gilmour is so impressed that he hired them to play at his own birthday party one year.
