Hi I’ve a 1976 CB550 K2 and I’m looking for the later type rocker cover with the pinned rocker shafts. Thanks.

Unless yours is very worn there is no real advantage plus only the 77 onwards had them so not a vast supply

Hi thanks for reply,  yes mine is worn I realise it’s a long shot getting hold of a later box but probably worth a try before going down the machine shop route. Cheers

Despite rumours you dont see that many worn ones so you may get a decent ordinary used one

I got one from Sayonara cycles in Germany for quite a lot of money and Oddjob (Ken) bought it from me for what I paid in the end. I don't think that the later cover arrangement was the ideal answer to the problem, as the pins still wore badly, due to lack of rotation and the pin part for the later cover was virtually unobtanium NOS (this was just after 1st Covid lock-down) . Ken and I discussed this and decided it may be worth hard chroming and then grinding and polishing to size. Last I heard he had done exactly that (not cheap IIRC) but of course he's not allowed to comment on here any more to tell us the outcome.

It may be better just getting a standard 500 cover that doesn't have mega miles on it and hence no ovality on the pin bores.

I got the bargain of the century then, I paid £10.50 for one on EBay back in January.
Definitely the pinned type because I’ve stripped it down ready for vapour blasting.

There was someone on here who had a spare he was willing to part with ages ago though. I was tempted but stuck with what I have as it wasn't worn that much. Can't remember who it was.

Bring back Ken…

I'm sure the site moderator will lift Kens suspension as and when he considered Ken has been punished enough, assuming Ken wants to return.
Knowing Ken still views our posts I'm sure he still has the helping gene, unlike some of  those who wanted him gone have hardy contributed since.

Sayonara owed me £35 but the cover was £120 in total IIRC

It was a lockdown buy .... and everyone telling me that the pinned covers are the dogs b*llocks ... which, in my view, didn't turn out to be the case. Anyway, It got me to meet Ken in person as he rode over to East Yorks to  meet me and collect it and have a good old chat.

Probably a poor choice of words by me but suspension is what it is, a penalty of some sort. I believe we are the losers here not having the benefit of Ken's knowledge, his experience, his willingness to engage  in replies and PM's. I have noticed some other members have stepped up to the plate so as to speak in replying to posts, I will not name them, they know who they are. I can only speak for myself here, I do miss his input and critical eye.
I will take this opportunity to thank all those who have helped me during the later part of my 500 build and now on my Superdream project. As I have said previously our moderator has a difficult task plus we do not know all the back story  that led up to the current situation.

I have found this sohc site brilliant in finding answers to my many questions, answering problems frequently backed up with thorough explainations. In addition I would like to add that when I have gone through personal health issues members here have helped me cope with the stuff life throws at us.  The total value of a site is I think always greater than the sum of its individual members.
