Anyone go to Stafford?
« on: October 13, 2024, 10:46:12 AM »
Went to Stafford yesterday 1st thing ...  my son always pays and drives me there. So a good chance for a bit of father/son bonding/banter.

Bit disappointed... poor turnout of autojumble and it  p*ssed down all of the time we were there, although we left about 1pm and it was getting drier by then. David Silvers rummage area was disappointing too ... eBay prices rather than his normal autojumble prices.

Not been for years.  Maybe for the same reason I rarely go to the Big Newark autojumble and other places the same.
There is little to find for the bikes I have.  And usually it's easier to look online.  And maybe the future for these "historic" old vehicles is not so bright.

I haven't been for years either, it always seems to be chucking it down when I have been which makes the trudge around the outdoor autojumble a cold, wet affair especially when having to ride the bike 120 miles home when already soaked. The last time I went I came out to find someone had knocked the fairing on my VFR taking the edge down to the black plastic below :(.

TBH most of the items I have bought at the show I could have bought on-line far cheaper than paying the entrance fee, fuel, tea etc. Yes it is nice to see the club stands and the celebs but it needs something a bit more to attract me now considering the high costs involved in getting there.

Maybe DSS didn't have a big rummage area because he'd sold a lot of stock at the recent 400/4 event Ash?

Anyone going to the NMM event at the end of October, that's normally pretty good and its free entry and you have a chance to win another old clunker :)

Bl**dy Hell Dave that was EXACTLY my thought too.  I asked the guy in the rummage are (Dean?) if they had done well at the 400 event autojumble and he said it had been a fantastic success There were mudguards at Stafford, which would normally be 30-40 quid and they were asking 100. 1st time I have ever come away from the DS area with nothing and I was there really early on. Everything was further complicated for me, as I couldn't receive any calls/texts/no internet coverage because Ancestry had scammed me the night before, debiting a large unauthorised  amount from my bank account, so I had my card cancelled just before my phone contract was set to renew.

Absolute scumbags that scam you Ash. It doesn't have to be scammers either, some companies do it legally using the auto renewal scam. I've had it previously with insurance companies.
A mate has just gone on holiday to Cyprus. He arrived there late on Sunday evening, had a meal and went to pay with his credit card only to be told it was invalid! His card had been used in Ilford on the same day to pay Just Eat. He's now in Cyprus for 10 days with no cash and no credit card due to scammers. Luckily his wife has a card!

I'm not sure if it was Saturdays poor weather, on Sunday I was very disappointed that there was not a 400N to be seen nor did I see a Honda stand.  My BiL and I agreed that two shows a year might be one too many.
The rise in stall prices is perhaps the new economic reality bubbling through.

This is a neat 500 restoration in the USA.

The Kempton Park Autojumble has become the same old thing every other month now. It's the same stalls selling the same thing with the only difference being the increase in admission price! The bikes for sale on the stalls are overpriced and most have been pulled out from under a tarp and will go back under the same tarp until the next time if they don't sell.
I used to buy metal off cuts and lathe tools from a couple of traders but they gave up going due to the price of the pitch and were fed up standing in the wind and rain!
Unless there is something I really need or they have a proper bike show on I don't bother going anymore. Paying £10 to walk around a windswept piece of tarmac with disgusting toilets looking at old and expensive worn out tat in the wet & cold no longer appeals. I used to spend more time looking at visitors bikes in the car park!
Morton's who run the Kempton Park, Stafford, Netley and Newark shows need to look at their business model and come up with something new to attract visitors. When you look at the demographic of the visitors who attend these events they are middle to old age men, never families or couples (unless it's Stafford where the inclement weather can mostly be avoided).
For me to attend Kempton Park costs about £25 when I take into account the entry fee, petrol and the cost of a tea bag! Nine times out of ten I come home with a tube of Autosol and maybe  half a dozen stainless bolts!

Might be an age thing - except most of us on here are of 'advanced years' but I have felt the same for many years now and apart from an odd trip to Stafford and NEC, haven't been to an auto jumble for many years.  When we were South I used to really look forward to Bolton Silverwell Street, Rufforth and Huddersfield but more and more tool stalls took over selling mostly the same Chinese crap at inflated prices and the genuine jumble was gradually squeezed out.
Ebay started out as a great place to find and sell stuff but all sides got greedy and now it's hard to find honest stuff at the right price.  Thank God for Steve and this Forum! Or should that be 'Thank Steve and God for this Forum?'

Newark is still OK. I think that Steves spares guy in Hull exists on selling the stuff he buys from there and re-sells at rip-off prices on his eBay site. Rufforth is a waste of time though these days and swarming with pick-pockets.

He beat me to it on this roller that I really needed for my Bomber engine. Probably paid a quid or less for it.

What's the roller made of Ash - can I make one as payment for the stay?  I've just made 31 similar in steel for a mate's Pottinger silage cutter - I get all the good jobs where everything smells of cow shite!  If the material is available - perhaps Delryn - Nylon 66?  I can soon knock one up if you have a pattern or drawing.

Thanks for offer Ian but I bought one from DS at his 400F event to save on postage. £35 for a repro one made in Japan. You owe me nothing , so please don't fret.
