An unusual clutch cable failure?
« on: July 30, 2024, 08:00:11 PM »
Trust something like this to happen on the hottest day of the year  ::) I was riding quiet happily through the infamous territory of darkest Deptford in south east London when....my clutch cable broke. Oh great, I never had my smartphone that thankfully I didn't end up needing, but I still had to leave my bike in a place I wouldn't want to leave it, I would know I used to live in Deptford, and take a bus/tube journey home where I had a spare cable so I turned the matter around in a couple of hours. However the cable is only a few months old and hasn't been worked hard, there was no stretching or fraying you'd expect to see.
What had happened was a first for me, the cable had pulled clean out of the stop at the handle bar end, Chinese welding or something. No prizes for guessing where I got the cable from, that said I've never had trouble with DSS's clutch cables before.
Anyone else had this one before?

What's the workaround for this? Start up, walk along to get the bike moving then click into gear. Keep in low gear. Plan ahead to stop and be ready to go into neutral before you stall. Probably ok in the country with little or no traffic, but not so easy in a town or city.

Or, take the cable cover off, shorten the cable run (reroute) then lash the cable end to the clutch lever ..somehow. ...that doesn't sound very practical as it's not so easy to tie notes in a cable 🙂.

Or like most old brit bike owners did carry a solderless nipple in the toolkit

I drove from Conwy to Derby in an  Alfa with a broken clutch cable leaving late at night. Managed the journey having only once been forced to stop at a set of lights. Double declutching with lots of anticipation. No Motorway on the route back then.

That would be a suicide mission in London even in the small hours!  :o
