Chromed Carbs .. stripping the chrome off !
« on: June 29, 2024, 10:01:00 PM »
I took member  jojotut's CB750K0 carbs to Prestige Plating to get them to strip all of the plating as a PO had chrome plated them and the mounting bar as well.

It was  bit scary handing them over as I didn't quite know what state they would be in after reverse plating but pretty pleased with how they turned out for Steve. Sadly they had been triple plated and reverse plating doesn't remove the copper but I tried treating  a carb body in the all important 'Keihin' logo area and managed to buff off the copper and get a decent finish. OK they will never regain their original iridescent sheen but most 50 odd year old carbs lost that years ago anyway.
A lot of work still to do though but with carb sets costing around 500 quid a pop .. well worth saving.

Loads of doom and gloom Facebook keyboard warriors predicted disaster but that'l show 'em.

Prestige reckons that whoever had them chromed must have spent an absolute fortune getting them done.

Interesting to find out this sort of process Ash.

Something that maybe of interest, photographic fix will strip copper chemically, obviously it's fortè is silver, Ag, but pretty effective in "consuming" copper based too.

Could be worth a test with sacrificial damaged component to assess on carb base metal in cautious approach and find any risk.

It would be C41 film fix to try it.

Interesting Nigel ... I did read that a mixture of Ammonia & Hydrogen Peroxide can be used ... problem is they are not my own parts and I would deffo have to experiment with a scrap part first.

Don’t know what the chemicals are but what about the stuff that etches the copper to make pcb’s.
Did it many years ago in my electronics lessons at school.

That's ferric chloride Steve ( have 5litres at work for making  PCB's as you say)... It attacks alloy I think but could give it a try.  I have also used sodium persulphate for etching PCB's

Managed to bring one of JoJo's 750K0 carbs up to scratch. I have bead blasted the rest of his parts but the other three are down to him to polish now as I need to crack on with my own stuff. Proves you can remove the chrome and recover them to a decent standard...one in the eye for all of the Social Media Facebook experts who said I was wasting my time. Still a hint of copper but that should buff off.

Steve (JojoTut on here) who's carbs they are asked what I used after Prestige stripped the chrome and nickel but not all of the copper.

This is what I used to remove the remaining copper plating  & give it a rough polish. Started out as 6 squares of el-cheapo green Scotchbrite on the arbor that you usually mount polishing mops on. Very forgiving and gets into the nooks & crannies really effectively. No need to cut out circles, they end up circular fairly quickly anyway and the setup lasts for ages before they wear down too small to use effectively. Polishing motor came out of the skip at work after we got flooded in 2013. It just needed new bearings.

Great job Ash! Like the idea of the scotchbrite squares, these mops are costly and don’t last long!

RSA project stalled at the 'mo Dave until I know the EXACT positioning of the centre section on the petrol tank. I wonder if DS has one in his museum?

I'm 99% sure he has one Ash. I offered my RSA to David Silver for his museum and was told they already had one.
Maybe if you call them and ask for Charles Cheshire he might measure their tank for you?
