Slight play between final drive output shaft and engine sprocket
« on: November 08, 2024, 11:51:22 AM »
Just a quick question, I have fitted a new front sprocket to my engine and there is a bit of play between the sprocket and the drive shaft even when the locking plate is fitted and tightened is this normal for a bike with 40,000 on the clock and is it anything to be worried about.
The only solution I can see if it is an issue is to get a replacement shaft !

I think that is normal on this type of sprocket fixing. It allows for some movement of the sprocket, I assume to aid chain alignment?

When you think of the drive cushions in the rear wheel, primary drive and the clutch the final drive gear arrangement does seem an odd arrangement of wanton free play.🫣

Many bike's output sprocket are like this, with "jangly" fit.

Quite a neat design and with minimal machining needed, no real impact on performance either if they're not manufactured wayout of sensible tolerance.

They never usually get stuck either, so puller not necessary to extract along with some having restricted accessibility.

There's more driveline slack in each gear with dog engagement than you'd ever get here too. You'd never notice this little amount in practical terms.
