According to DVLA it's got current road tax so someone somewhere is using it..it's recorded as RED...it's never been a Phil Read Replica has it?

Looks like a York registration .... Probably came from Alan Mountains when new.

I’ve been thinking about this recently, since my old bike from back in the 80’s turned up last week.... SteveD who runs the forum says that its the first time he can remember it happening in 20 years which really surprises me. I would have thought that since sohc Honda’s are fairly uncommon (as a percentage of all bikers....obviously not uncommon amongst classics) and this forum is such a central source of advice, that most sohc owners would have a look on here and more connections would crop up... I guess one explanation would be that firstly most of them are now scrapped off and secondly that most of the guys who owned them back in the day have moved on...?

Another explanation might be they don't remember the Reg number!  I had two 750 F2's and I can't recall the reg of either bike.     To be honest, I struggle to remember the Reg numbers of the ones I have in the garage now!   Ain't old age a bugger.   

Ash is right DN in the reg was always a York plate.  One I do remember is my first road bike when I was 17 an RD200 Yamaha ODN493P.  You might be right that it first came from Alan Mountains Ash, but don't forget Shearsmiths on Blossom street sold Hondas too.

Yes you are dead right ... but all of the ones I seem to come across, including my 1st Honda CB400/4 XDN128R and my CB750K0 TAJ 30H, all came from Mountains. I always thought my 750 was the 1st 750 to be reg'd in Yorkshire but I heard a rumour from a very knowlegeable bloke that Mountains imported one before the 1st official batch came to the UK in Jan. 1970. My mate has Mountains second shop in Haley's terrace York but he flogs Enfields & scooters now. Who was the York dealer at the top of the A1079 Hull road who had bikes in an upstairs showroom?

Russells had the shop I think you are referring to.  That's where I got my RD200 from.  It was a family business and they had a large push bike shop too in the centre of town near the fire station.

That's why I can't find my two 750's.  On a different thread I put the reg of my CBX-6 cos I have old pictures of it showing the number, but I think that and the RD200 are the only bike Reg numbers I recall from over 40 bikes I've owned.  I might be able to get a few others off old photos too perhaps.

My point was if more people (like me) could remember their old reg numbers, there might be a lot more posts in the 'Where's my old bike' thread, and therefore  might there be the opportunity of more original owners being re-united with their former steeds?

Yes thats true, if more people were asking “where’s my old bike” there would be more connections...its a numbers game. My thoughts were that for those bikes that are known to be still out there ie sorned and particularly those taxed and thus being used, you would expect a decent percentage of the owners to be on here at one time or another and to have a look in that section..... but it doesn’t seem to work like that.

Ha ha ,One thing (on this rainy afternoon) this thread has done is to get me to look through some old photos and I've got one of my first 750 F2 showing the reg!   Rather than hi-jack this thread further I'll start a new one. Lol

It's one of those things that interest us for obvious reasons (finding out what happened to an old bike) and you never know when info will turn up.

I was at a bike meet a while ago,  got talking to someone that turned up on a bike like one my dad had owned,  remembered the reg number as it's in quite a few family photos,  he called someone in their owner's club,  and that person is the current owner of the bike.

First owned by my dad,  even raced in production races with a third place at the TT, and sold in 1954. All of us were amazed at this coming about from such tenuous links.  Just goes to show you can be surprisingly close to something unbeknown to you.

The reg numbers recorded on here certainly come up in general searches,  so if it's posted and someone now owning it looks for history, then there's a chance to connect however small.
