Wobbly brake lever
« on: September 30, 2019, 08:23:15 AM »
There's a fair amount of travel in my (front) brake lever before the business end actually makes contact with the end of the master cylinder piston. I reckon I've get 20-25mm of play as seen at the end of the lever. I don't think I can fix it either, you'd have to build up the end to make it contact sooner.

Don't know if it's an original Honda lever perhaps it's a poor copy, just interested if anyone else has noticed similar?

Are you sure it is 20-25mm? Not 2.0-2.5mm?

I cannot imagine 20mm play  :o

It could be a lot of wear in the pivot hole of the lever if it's an old one, or wear on the pivot bolt itself. Take the pivot bolt out and check for wear.

There's a joke in there but without the Nurse around to control things, I'll leave it!

Definitely 20mm. Will check the pivot, good idea! :)

Hmmm. So the pivot I have is worn a bit, but the biggest issue is the rubber bung bit the lever is supposed to push against isn't there! I knew I'd missed a bit when I reassembled but the poxy bit of tube that came out didn't look like it would do anything anyway.
Have ordered from the pirate and will hopefully be 'done done'.

What rubber bung? The lever pushes direct onto the master piston, or at least should do

It's the bit the lever rests against, looking at the diagrams if you take the bottom nut off the lever, the plate comes off, and the rubber bung goes in the hole next to the pivot bolt. So when the brake lever is at rest, it's squashing the rubber tube.

I think?

I had wobbly front brake lever. parts 224 225 on the above drawing. the hardened pin was missing. I made a pin  from out of a chain cut to length. I managed to find the retaining 225  part which fits underneath from a box of bits supplied with the bike. Works fine now .

Julie gets another housepoint, yes that's it. Arrived yesterday all fitted and removes a load of the wobble. If I'd known it was a piece of petrol pipe, I might have saved myself the £3.55 plus £2.95 post. In fact I also got the repro pivot bolt as both the ones I had were obviously worn.
